Howdy! I'm Johnny Quest and I started my blowing glass career in Texas. My first introduction to glassblowing is when my mom gave me a Groupon for my 16th birthday to be taught by Aaron Tate. I made a paperweight that was blue and yellow and had Aaron push an indent in the top so it could be “A pencil holder” but really I wanted it to hold my Ti dabber at the time. At Aaron’s studio Kevin Morris (Katafish Glass at the time) had a torch set up and some pendants set out. Realizing that was actually the style of glass blowing I wanted to get into I got his number from Aaron and started an informal apprenticeship in learning how to start lampworking. Kevin later helped me set up a torch in my backyard and helped me get my foot the door with borosilicate. Thank you Mom! Thank you Aaron Tate and Kevin Morris!
Now I reside in beautiful Oregon, and always inspired by the whole scene. There are so many talented artists out there, and I'm constantly finding new inspirations that ‘wow’ me. Some of my biggest are James Daschbach, Chris Carlson, Kevin McCulley, Cesare Toffolo, Stormin Norman, Mike Raman, Richard Hollingshead, Mike Gong, Power Pat, and so so many more have helped morph me into the artist I am today. Thank you to the glass family that raised me in a way.
I try my best to follow my highest excitement and make all types of glass from pendants to bubble trapped and fine lined houseware. For functionals, I love making tasteful dry pipes like sherlocks and hammers I really feel like they are my roots along with mini tubes. Another silhouette of mine is the Floor perc where I tried to get the holes from the percolator under as much water as possible to create a crisp new feeling function. I also love making marbles and seeing where my ideas lead me with a somewhat limited pallet including silver fuming, bubble traps, enamel white and other parameters I sometimes set to see what happens.
